When to go

Sri Lanka has two monsoons, and this is the key fact: the west and south coasts (Negombo, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Galle) are best from December to April; the east coast (Trincomalee, Pasikuda) from May to September. So the island works year-round — you just need the RIGHT coast. Ask your operator which side suits your dates; it changes the whole trip.

What kind of holiday it is

Sri Lanka is not just a beach. It is ocean surf, tea plantations, baby elephants and ancient cities. A common plan: 3–4 days touring the island (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Sigiriya Rock), then the rest by the ocean. The sea has swell — with children pick a sheltered bay or a hotel with a pool. It is also one of the cheapest places to learn to surf.

Visa and documents

Sri Lanka requires an electronic travel authorisation (ETA), obtained online without long waits. Your passport must be valid at least six months beyond your return. Your operator handles the paperwork — they only need your passport details. The process and fee change — your operator confirms what is current.

What to see

Sigiriya — an ancient palace atop a rock, about an hour’s climb. Kandy has the Temple of the Tooth, with tea plantations around and the hill train (one of the world’s loveliest rides). The elephant orphanage at Pinnawala. Galle — a town inside a Portuguese-Dutch fort. At sea: whale watching (Mirissa) and turtles. Spice gardens and Ceylon tea make the best souvenirs.

Flights and money

Tashkent to Colombo is usually one stop (via Dubai, for example), 9–12 hours in total. Time difference: plus 4.5 hours. The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee. Costs are low: lunch at a local place is 3–6 dollars, a car with driver for a day is 40–60 (great value for a group). 25–40 dollars a day per person is plenty.
