Unawatuna: Sri Lanka’s calm bay
Who it suits
Unawatuna is one of the few places in Sri Lanka where the ocean calms down: the bay curves in a half circle, so swimming is easier and safer with children. It is not a loud resort — small hotels, cafés, palms. For quiet and nature; not for nightlife.
When to come
Unawatuna sits on the south coast, so December to April is best: sunny with a calm ocean. May to September brings more rain and swell here — in those months the east coast (Trincomalee) is better. Check dates with your operator: a few days can change the whole trip.
What is nearby
Galle Fort is 15 minutes away — a town inside Dutch walls, lovely at dusk. Mirissa, half an hour off, is for whale watching (November–April). A turtle hatchery and Jungle Beach are close. Tea country and the hill train are a day trip towards Ella. Surf schools on the beach are cheap.
Practical notes
It is 2.5–3 hours from Colombo airport — arrange the transfer in advance. Food is spicy; asking for “not spicy” is normal. Halal food is available and seafood is plentiful. A car with driver runs 40–60 dollars a day. The ocean has currents — watch the flags and listen to locals.
