Egypt holidays: what to know before you go

When to go

Egypt’s strength is a year-round sea. September–November and March–May are the easiest: 28–32°C by day, warm water. December–February can be cool on land (15°C in the evening), but the Red Sea holds 21–23 — swimmable, just pick a hotel with a heated pool. June–August is very hot, above 40 — which is why prices drop. January and March can be windy: sheltered bays (Makadi, Soma Bay) stay calmer.

Sharm el-Sheikh or Hurghada

Sharm el-Sheikh sits by the reefs with a superb underwater world; you often enter from a pontoon over corals, so reef shoes are a must. Hurghada has sandy, gentle entries — easier with children and cheaper, though less impressive below the surface. Sharm is better sheltered; Hurghada is windier (a plus for surfing). With kids: Hurghada or Makadi; for diving: Sharm or Dahab.

Visa and documents

Egypt issues a tourist entry permit — usually on arrival, sometimes in advance. Your passport must be valid at least six months beyond your return. If you stay at the resort and fly home, the procedure is simpler. Important: the exact process and fee depend on your tour and dates — your operator sorts it out in advance and tells you what to bring.

What to see

Underwater: Ras Mohammed reserve, Tiran Island, the Blue Hole. Even non-swimmers have glass-bottom boats and a submarine. On land: Cairo and the Giza pyramids (a long, tiring day trip that stays with you for life), the temples of Luxor, quad bikes in the desert and a bedouin night. Naama Bay in Sharm for an evening walk; the old town and market in Hurghada. Book excursions through your operator rather than at the hotel desk — then someone is accountable for you.

Flights and money

The flight from Tashkent is about 5 hours, with direct charters in season. Time difference: minus three hours. Hotels are usually all-inclusive, so pocket money goes on excursions, souvenirs and tips — 20–35 dollars a day is plenty. Dollars are accepted everywhere; bring small notes (1s and 5s) as tipping is the norm.
