Sharm el-Sheikh: for the underwater world
Who it suits
Sharm has some of the world’s best reefs: put on a mask and fish swim right beneath you. Ideal for learning to dive. Be aware, though: many beaches enter from a pontoon over coral — painful without reef shoes. For small children, specifically ask for a hotel with a sandy entry.
Which bay to choose
Naama Bay is the centre: restaurants, shops, nightlife, all walkable. Sharks Bay and Ras Nasrani are quieter with close reefs. Nabq is cheaper but further out and windier. Hadaba sits in between. Want quiet — stay away from Naama; want buzz — stay in it.
Excursions
Ras Mohammed reserve and a boat to Tiran Island are the classics. Quad bikes in the desert and a bedouin night. A day in Dahab with the Blue Hole. The night climb up Mount Sinai for sunrise is unforgettable but physically demanding. Book excursions through your operator — then someone is accountable.
Practical notes
Bring reef shoes, sunscreen and a mask and snorkel — they cost more locally. Drink bottled water only. Hotels are usually all-inclusive. Carry small dollar notes for tips. January and February evenings are cool, so pack a light jacket.
