Sharjah: next to Dubai, but cheaper
Who it suits
Sharjah is the emirate next door: the same sea and sun, notably cheaper hotels. Alcohol is not sold and life is calmer — which is exactly what families and older travellers appreciate. Halal food is simply the default.
Getting to Dubai
A taxi takes 30–40 minutes and costs little. But weekday mornings and evenings jam badly — plan Dubai trips for midday. Many hotels run a free shuttle to Dubai’s malls; ask before booking, as it saves real money.
What to see
The Al Majaz waterfront and fountain, the Al Noor Mosque, and the Central Souk (the “Blue Souk”) for souvenirs and spices. The Sharjah Aquarium and the Museum of Islamic Civilisation work well with children. Beach hotels cluster around Al Khan and the Corniche.
Practical notes
Sharjah is stricter than Dubai on dress: cover shoulders and knees in the city, relax on your hotel beach. There is no metro — taxis or buses. Prices run 20–30% below Dubai, food included. Both airports are close: Dubai and Sharjah.
