Tbilisi: old town and food
Who it suits
Tbilisi is not about the sea but about atmosphere: narrow streets, balconied houses, food and mountains. It suits young couples and groups of friends. No visa, three hours by air. Halal food exists but is worth checking in advance — pork is common here.
Where to stay
Best bases are the Old Town (Abanotubani, Meidan) or around Rustaveli Avenue — restaurants, baths and museums on foot. Vera and Vake are quieter and more residential. Streets are steep and cobbled, so with luggage ask in advance how to reach your hotel.
What is nearby
Mtskheta, the ancient capital, is a half-day trip. The road to Kazbegi is a full day of mountain views. Kakheti means vineyards and wine, with the October harvest. In winter Gudauri offers skiing two hours away. Summers in the city are hot, so the mountains are a good escape.
Practical notes
The currency is the lari. Metro and buses are very cheap; use an app for taxis. A hearty dinner for two is 15–25 dollars. For souvenirs: churchkhela, spices, wine. Three or four days covers the city; a week if you add Batumi.
