Dubai city: choosing your area
Deira and Bur Dubai — affordable
Old Dubai: souks, affordable hotels, Indian and Arab restaurants, metro at hand. The beach requires a ride — it is not on your doorstep. First-timers and shoppers usually stay here: much cheaper, and always lively. Halal food everywhere.
Jumeirah and Marina — by the sea
Here the beach is in the hotel or two minutes away. It costs more, but with children it saves time and patience — no daily trip just to swim. Marina has towers, restaurants and a promenade; Jumeirah is calmer and more family-oriented.
What is nearby
Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall are on the metro — buy tickets ahead. Desert safaris pick you up anywhere in the city. Palm Jumeirah, Global Village (winter) and the Miracle Garden. Sharjah is half an hour by taxi and cheaper. Abu Dhabi makes a day trip for the Sheikh Zayed Mosque.
Practical notes
The metro is cheap and clean — get a Nol card. Taxis are reasonable too. Summer outdoors is punishing; malls and water parks save the day. Modest dress is expected in the city (covered shoulders and knees), beaches are relaxed. Mosques are everywhere.
