Baku: a city that fits into a weekend
Who it suits
Baku is the easiest city for a first trip abroad: a two-hour flight, no visa and no language barrier. Halal food is the norm rather than the exception, which makes it comfortable for older parents and big families.
Where to stay
Stay near Icherisheher (the old town) or the seaside boulevard — everything is walkable. The Torgovaya street area is best for shopping and restaurants. Cheaper hotels sit further out, which is fine if the metro is close: it is cheap and quick.
What is nearby
A day trip: Gobustan (rock art and mud volcanoes) and Yanardag, where flames burn from the ground. Half a day: the Bibi-Heybat Mosque and the Ateshgah temple. Further afield, Sheki with its caravanserai and sweets, 4–5 hours away. In summer people head to the Caspian beach clubs.
Practical notes
The currency is the manat; cards work almost everywhere, cash is for the bazaar. Order taxis through an app. Baku is windy — bring a light jacket in spring and autumn. Dinner for two runs 20–35 dollars. Three or four days is enough to see the city.
