Istanbul: city, history and shopping
Who it suits
Istanbul is three trips in one: history, shopping and food. It never feels foreign to a visitor from Uzbekistan — mosques, the call to prayer, halal food, tea. It does not depend on the beach season, so people go year-round: families, solo travellers and buyers alike.
Where to stay
Sultanahmet puts the history on foot: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi — the safest choice for a first visit. Taksim and Beyoğlu mean nightlife and restaurants. Laleli and Aksaray are the wholesale districts for buyers. The Asian side (Kadıköy) is cheaper and more local.
What to see and buy
Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, the Basilica Cistern. A Bosphorus cruise is cheap and the most memorable hour of the trip. At the Grand Bazaar and Spice Market haggling is expected — never pay the first price. For shopping: Zorlu, Mall of Istanbul, the outlets. In the evening, the Ortaköy waterfront.
Practical notes
Get an Istanbulkart — metro, tram, bus and ferry on one card, much cheaper. The city is vast: never plan two distant districts in one day. Change money in the city, not at the airport. Rain is frequent — bring an umbrella. Allow at least four days.
