Pattaya: cheap and always busy

Who it suits

Pattaya is the cheapest way into Thailand for a first trip: inexpensive hotels and food, plenty to do, and Bangkok two hours away. Halal food exists but takes looking for — ask your operator for a hotel near halal restaurants. The town is loud: if you want quiet, Phuket or Jomtien is the honest answer.

Which beach to choose

Pattaya Beach is central and convenient but the water is mediocre. Jomtien to the south is calmer and more family-friendly with a long strand. Naklua is quietest, favoured by older travellers. For clear water, take the 40-minute boat to Ko Larn — most people do, and they are right.

What to see

Nong Nooch Garden is a full day with children. The wooden Sanctuary of Truth is Pattaya’s most beautiful sight. The floating market, Ko Larn island, an elephant camp. A day in Bangkok: the Big Buddha, the palace, the canals. There are many shows — ask your operator for the family ones.

Practical notes

Get around by songthaew (open minibus) — very cheap: wave to stop, ring to get off. Drink bottled water. Be careful renting a scooter: insurance often does NOT cover motorbike injuries. Book excursions with your operator, not with street touts. 25–40 dollars a day is enough.
