Kuala Lumpur: an easy city for Muslim travellers
Why it feels familiar
Malaysia is a Muslim country: mosques everywhere, the call to prayer, “halal” signage as the norm in restaurants and malls, and prayer rooms even at the airport. Food is never a worry. Add visa-free entry and prices well below Europe, and it becomes an easy city for families and older parents.
Where to stay
KLCC, by the Petronas Towers, is the most convenient base — mall and park on foot. Bukit Bintang is the dining and shopping district, lively at night. Chinatown and around is cheaper. The metro and monorail work well, so a hotel near a station is all you need.
What to see
The Petronas Towers (best lit up at night), the Batu Caves with their coloured staircase and temple, and KL Tower. With children: Aquaria KLCC and the Sunway Lagoon water park. Day trips: Putrajaya, the government city with its pink mosque, and Genting Highlands for mountain air and a cable car. For shopping: Mid Valley, Pavilion, Suria KLCC.
Practical notes
Hot and humid year-round with one heavy downpour most days — bring an umbrella and light clothes. The currency is the ringgit; cards work everywhere. Taxis via Grab are cheap. Food is very cheap: lunch at a local place is 3–5 dollars. Langkawi is an hour away by air, and many combine the two.
