Bali: ocean, rice terraces and temples
Who it suits
Bali is an island for exploring rather than lying still: rice terraces, volcanoes, waterfalls, temples. One of the most popular honeymoon and photography destinations. The ocean has swell — great for surfing, while small children are better off at a hotel with a pool. Halal restaurants exist but are worth finding in advance.
Which area to choose
Kuta and Legian are cheap, busy and near the airport. Seminyak and Canggu bring restaurants, cafés and a modern scene. Nusa Dua is the calmest and most family-friendly, with quiet water and the big resorts. Ubud is not the ocean but jungle and culture: rice terraces, the monkey forest, yoga. Many split the trip: a few days in Ubud, then the coast.
What to see
The Tanah Lot and Uluwatu temples are best at sunset. The Tegallalang rice terraces, a sunrise climb up Mount Batur, the Sekumpul waterfall. A day boat to Nusa Penida — where the famous photos are taken. Roads are narrow and slow: never plan three stops in one day.
Practical notes
It is a long haul: one or two stops from Tashkent, 12–15 hours. So take at least ten days. A car with driver costs 40–60 dollars a day and is the easiest way to move. Drink bottled water; the sun is strong. Entry permits are arranged in advance by your operator.
