Baku: one of the easiest destinations for a short break
Baku is close, the flight is short and language is no barrier. A good pick when you cannot take a long holiday: three or four days is enough.
Why it suits a short trip
The flight is short, so little of the trip is spent travelling. On a three-day break that decides everything: a long-haul trip loses two days to the journey.
The city is compact: the main sights sit close together and much of it is walkable.
Language is no trouble — Russian works almost everywhere, and Uzbek is understood in many places.
When to go
Spring and autumn are best: mild weather and pleasant walking.
Summer can be hot and windy; there is a beach season, but Baku is not primarily a beach destination.
Winter is not freezing, though the wind bites. Fine for sightseeing, and cheaper.
Documents and money
Entry rules change from time to time, so no fixed conditions here: your operator checks the rule that applies on your departure date.
Mind your passport validity: it must extend beyond your return. Your operator states the exact requirement for your dates.
Changing money locally is easy. Cards are widely accepted, but markets and small cafés want cash.
What deserves your time
The Old City (Icherisheher) — narrow streets inside the fortress walls. A few hours is enough, but do not rush it.
The seafront promenade — save it for the evening. This is where the city looks its best.
If you want to leave town, nature and historic sites fit a day trip. Arrange it with your operator in advance: the drive has to be counted in.
